Bernardo Rey, Spring Semester 2010
Artist-In-Residence
In the Spring of 2010, the Butler Department of Theatre is
pleased to bring Columbian born director - designer and mask artist
Bernardo Rey as Guest Artist in Residence. While at Butler, Mr. Rey
will teach seminars in Mask Construction/ Performance and in
Scenography/ The Essential Object, and will direct our final
mainstage production of the season.
Mr. Rey studied at the National School of Dramatic Arts of
Bogota (ENAD), the studio of incision "La Huella," the
academy of painting of David Manzur in Bogotà, and the Academia di
Belle Arte of Florence. He participated at the fourth session of
the ISTA (International School of Theatre Anthropology), directed
by Eugenio Barba. For 3 years he participated at the Laboratory
Theatre and Theatre of Sources, both directed by Jerzy Grotowski.
He continued this work an additional year with Rizsard Cieslak
(principal actor of Grotowski) in the Paris performance "Mon
Pauvre Fedia."
With Beatriz Camargo, he created the Teatro Itinerante del Sol,
a group dedicated to the study of pre-Columbian American myths:
actors trained in research and the use of masks, and toured their
performances in South America and Europe.
In Italy he and Nube Sandoval created the Centre of Theatre
Research (Teatro Cenit). His work has focused on the research and
application of the visual arts in the performing arts, creating
sceneries, masks, objects and theatrical machines, sculptures and
posters for groups in Columbia, Europe, and the USA.

- Campocruz, Story of one Eradicated Italy
- Menhires Ars Memoriæ currently in Tournè in
Europe
- Il Verbo degli Invisibile, winner of the International
Biennial of Theatre and Psychiatry, Padova, and second prize at the
Roma Teatro Festival, Italy
He has been an invited guest teacher/artist with Bread
and Puppet Theatre (Vermont), Fort Lewis
College, (Colorado), International Symposium for
Directors, organized by La Mama Umbria International
(Spoleto, Italy), Accademia Silvio D'Amico (Rome),
Donato Sartori both at his Centro di
Maschere e Strutture Gestuali and at the Ecole
International de Marionette (Charlevilles, France). He was
recently invited by the University of India to
direct a performance with masks based on the universe of Garcia
Marquez.

- Il Verbo degli Invisibili directed by Bernardo Rey and
Nube Sandoval, produced by CIR- Italian Council of Refugees
(Naples).
- Premier of Sogni dall'Esilio directed by Bernardo Rey
and Nube Sandoval for the International Journal -ONU- for Refugees
Victime of Torture. Organized by CIR, in the Cloister Sant'Ivo alla
Sapienza, Rome.
- Workshop The Mask's Universe in Amelia, Italy.
- Participation in the Mindelact Festival 2007 (Capo Verde,
Africa)
- La Centa (Dinnertime), a multidisciplinary
installation that includes masks of glass, video, texts, water,
space, etc. Its theme is the contrast between abundance and misery.
The installation opened in Rome and then toured Europe.
- Voices of Babel in support of United Nation's day
recognizing Victims of Torture. Directed by Nube Sandoval and
Bernardo Rey with the participants of the Theatre Laboratory of the
VI-TO project (Help and Cure for victims of Torture) of the Italian
Council for Refugees -CIR-.Teatro India, Roma
- Mask, Myth, Science and Body 5° International School
of the Biodrama (Columbia)
The goal of the School is to propitiate experience through the
interrelation between different expressions of arts, crafts and
antique knowledge based on myths related to nature.
