Our Chapter

The Epsilon Mu chapter of Sigma Nu was first colonized at Butler University in 1926. Since then, we have initiated nearly 1,300 brothers. After a brief absence on campus, our chapter was recolonized and is currently one of the strongest chapters at the university, as well as a strong chapter in our international organization. The Butler chapter of Sigma Nu is highly acclaimed, having been recognized as one of the top ten fraternity chapters in the world in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. Additionally, was named the LEAD Chapter of the Year in 2007, honoring our chapter's achievements in developing ethical leaders.

Our Commitment to Academic Excellence

In our chapter, we realize that the single most important factor during our tenures at Butler is academic success. For this reason, we are first and foremost committed to excellence in that pursuit. Sigma Nu has traditionally held the highest academic average of all fraternities at Butler. In fact, our chapter GPA has always been in the top 3 among fraternities, including first in the most recent academic semester, and has always been above the average of all undergraduate men. Furthermore, we have consistently earned one of the highest chapter GPAs in our international organization. As a chapter, we are proud of our standard of academic excellence at Butler.

Our Contributions to the Campus and the Community

Academics aside, we are also pleased to be a strong chapter in other areas. In the spring of 2005, we were awarded the Lamp of Wisdom award from the university, an honor that was repeated in 2007. Sigma Nu is the only Greek organization to have ever earned this honor, which is given to the campus organization that most excels in the area of philanthropy. We hold events to benefit Riley Hospital, World Vision, the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and the Special Olympics, among others. Each Spring, we host our annual Snuper Bowl: a powder-puff football tournament among the sororities.

Our National Organization

Sigma Nu was born in the turbulent period known as America's reconstruction era. Two war veterans from Arkansas and a younger associate from Missouri founded the Fraternity at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. At VMI they had been drawn together to oppose the excessive hazing that took place in the “rat” system of that era, but they stayed together because they shared belief that honor should be central in their lives.
