Manuscripts will be accepting submissions of poetry, prose, essays, and short stories for the upcoming 2006 issue until February 3, 2006 (please note this change from the 2005 magazine). We select the best work from the Butler University campus, and encourage all students of any major to submit. The Manuscripts staff judges all pieces anonymously, and no preference or special considerations are given to students in English, Journalism, or related content areas.

Please keep the following guidelines in mind as you prepare your
Manuscripts submission:

  • Send us your very best work. We ask that each student submit no more than five pieces of well-written, carefully proofread work. Submissions that ignore this guideline will be returned unjudged.

  • Submit work electronically. All works must be submitted via e-mail to manuscripts@butler.edu. Please send written works as separately attached Microsoft Word documents. Include in your message:

Your Name

Title(s) of your work(s)

  • Untitled and anonymous submissions will not be considered. ("Untitled" is not an acceptable title, nor are pseudonyms acceptable credits of authorship.)

  • Length requirements. There is not a specific limit on length of submitted works. However, due to publishing considerations, works of over five double-spaced pages are more difficult for us to accomodate. We do not want to limit your creativity, but be advised that shorter pieces have a greater chance of getting in the magazine than longer works.

  • Multimedia and artwork submissions. Manuscripts publishes student photography and artwork in addition to literary works. Please follow all guidelines above regarding titling and electronic submission and send all works as JPEG or TIFF attachments.

  • By submitting your work, you acknowledge that the piece is an original by the indicated author and that Manuscripts claims one-time publication rights for both our magazine and our website.

Thank you for your interest, and we look forward to reading your work!
