Acceptance of Financial Responsibility

Butler University policy requires all students to complete the Acceptance of Financial Responsibility process now included in the Finance section of the Student Center prior to enrollment. The Acceptance of Financial Responsibility statement outlines the student’s responsibility for paying all expenses in addition to the penalties that may be incurred by the student if the expenses are not paid in a timely manner.

To complete the Acceptance of Financial Responsibility, students must log on to their my.butler.edu account and navigate to Self Service, then Student Center. Accept Financial Responsibility is under the Finances section. Students must read the complete statement by scrolling down the text box and complete the process by accepting the terms and conditions by clicking on the radio button next to "Accept Terms and Conditions" and SAVE. By completing the steps, the service indicator (which prevents enrollment) will be removed from the student’s account.

Students may contact the Help Desk at 317-940-4357 or email helpdesk@butler.edu if problems arise while logging on to their my.butler.edu account.

This requirement must be completed prior to enrollment.

The Office of Student Accounts generates and mails billing statements the second Wednesday of every month.  Payment is due by the due date reflected on the statement.  Please visit our billing statement page for important information. If you would like information about the monthly payment plan please click the payment plan link.

1098T Forms

1098T forms are mailed to DEGREE-SEEKING students home addresses OR to a billing address designated by the student on or before January 31, 2008, as required. The information provided on the 1098T form meets Butler University's obligation for reporting per IRS guidelines. The form is mailed with a letter of explanation in addition to the student’s Account Statement. The information is provided for tax reporting purposes only which pertains to the Hope Scholarship and Lifetime Learning tax credits.

Please consult a qualified tax advisor or the IRS for assistance in determining eligibility for tax credits and interpreting the information provided on the 1098T form. Staff members in the Office of Student Accounts are NOT trained in tax preparation and cannot assist in determining eligibility.

An Account Statement is mailed with the 1098T form which includes all charges and credits posted to the account beginning December 1, 2006, through the date printed on the statement. It is NOT a reflection of any current account balance.
Note:Tuition and fees that were billed in December 2006 for the Spring 2007 term are not included in Box 2 of the 1098-T form. Account Statements are included so that payments that were made on or after January 1, 2007, which were used to pay qualified tuition and fees can be calculated.

From the 1098T form, the Account Statement and individual payment records, a determination can be made as to eligibility for a tax credit. IRS form 8863, Education Credits, is available online at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8863.pdf. Detailed information from the IRS can be found in IRS publication 970 online at http://www.irs.gov/publications/p970/ar01.html You may also contact the Internal Revenue Service directly at 1-800-829-1040 toll free
