New Business

Strategic Plan Discussion - The plan went to the Board of Trustees in February and the final draft will be presented to them in May. President Fong, Provost Comstock and Professor McEvoy-Levy discussed the Strategic Plan. They discussed the changes and comments made to the February interaction. They are seeking input and will make a final draft that will cover the next 5 years. The deadline for comment is May 6. Comments during the discussion:

  • Butler Way was taken off - it is in the document for the next communication plan but not in the organizing theme
  • How does the Strategic Plan define diversity and what is the role of the Chief Diversity Officer? Lisa Walton answered: The emphasis is on the student population, reach out to under represented populations.
  • What is our goal outcome and what is in place to achieve this goal? Be 'employer of choice' for a diverse range of individuals. Welcoming greater understanding cultures and make them feel welcome.
  • Why does the Plan not address the staff volunteering but addresses the faculty volunteering? Changes were made to the Plan to list 'faculty, staff and students' throughout.

They are excited about the vision which is 'Dare to make a difference'.

ECO Earth Week - ECO presented a movie clip of 'Flow' which explains water as a scarcity. Next Wednesday is Earth Day and ECO is showing the full movie and hosting a series of events all week. All events are free and open to all. More information will be posted in the Digest and a link will be in the Staff Assembly newsletter. Efforts are being made to start a refillable drink system on campus.

New Postal Requirements - Mark Scales, Midwest Presort Service discussed ways to save money in postage and using Midwest Presort Service. The Post Office has new rules and regulations and they offer cost reduction for Presort to handle our mail first but with assurance that our mail is sent out in a timely manner. Butler will employ a method to capture correct address and stamp 'Return Service Requested' on each mailing. The Post Office will provide us with corrected addresses to update our database. Starting May 11, the Post Office will test the accuracy of outgoing mail. If we do not get an accepted accuracy percentage, we will pay full cost of the postage. All handwritten mail costs the full postage. Email Marsha Endre with questions.

Vote on the Bylaw Changes - Tyler presented the changes through a slide. A vote was taken and all approved. The changes take effect on June 1, 2009.

2009 Staff Satisfaction Survey - Tyler presented the slides of the survey summary results with a 39% response rate. The slides contained: Top 10 Agrees, Top 10 Disagrees, Top10 What would you change? and Top 10 What do you like least? The Executive Committee will look at the last two years and set a plan for next years' action items.

Two new staff members were introduced and welcomed to Butler.

The next Staff Assembly meeting will be on Wednesday, May 20, 2009.
