Welcome From The Director
Dear New Butler Musician or Colorguard Performer,
I would like to invite you to become part of the "Spirit Center
of the Butler Campus," the Butler University Marching Band (BUMB)
and Colorguard. The BUMB is a great way to make 100 friends in a
hurry and participation in the marching band fulfills your PE 102
requirement. You also receive a $100.00 reduction in your tuition
just for joining the band and guard. Rehearsals are Monday and
Wednesday from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. and Friday from 4:15 to 6:45
p.m.
Band and Colorguard members get to check in early, and that's no
small perk when you consider that typically 900+ new freshmen all
converge on our campus on Saturday and Sunday, August 22 & 23
for the new-student orientation "Welcome Week!"
Band members come in Friday
morning, August 21st and check into their dorm rooms anytime
between 9:00 a.m. and noon that day. The first rehearsal occurs at
1:30p.m. that afternoon. There are rehearsals and performances
during the new-student orientation "Welcome Week," but being a
member of the band or guard will not keep you from enjoying all the
important stuff "Welcome Week" has to offer.
We are looking for talented students on any wind or percussion
instrument, including guitar, mallet or electronic keyboards, or
flag/colorguard performers and we want you to be part of this
exciting and fun group.
Note the "no money involved" status of the band, and no
fundraising! All you need is a good pair of all-black
marching shoes for the band, and all-black shoes for the guard and
we provide the rest. We have instruments for your use for $10 a
semester and the small fee lets us keep them in good repair.
So, how do I join?
Remember the athletic bands when you're planning your schedule.
It's easier to build fun into your academic routine in the
beginning than to try and change your class schedule later!
Register for band and colorguard/flagline (ES119-01) during
early registration to take advantage of the $100.00 tuition
remission. BUMB membership also counts as PE 102. You have
to take a gym class sometime, and band is definitely fun! Our
season ends six weeks before finals, so time gets put back into
your schedule just when you need it most!
One scheduling conflict of note: If you are a
College of Business freshman, you will need to take MG101 in the
spring. The fall sections force you to miss football games. Spring
sections avoid this conflict.
