Marching Band and Basketball Band Ensembles

Marching Band

The Butler University Marching Band (BUMB), directed by David McCullough, is one of the university's most visible ensembles and is truly the "Spirit Center" of the band program and campus. Flags, twirlers, and instrumentalists combine their talents to thrill the audiences at the Butler Bowl and cheer on the Bulldogs.

Travel and Credit

The band travels frequently to cheer the Bulldogs to victory and often make special appearances en route. The BUMB also performs exhibition shows from time to time at area high school marching band contests. From 1993 to 2005 the Butler University Marching Band was the host of the Midwest Regional Bands of America Marching Championship in the RCA Dome and performed in special exhibition. We continue to assist with the show each year.

Marching Band credit earns a grade for participation, counts as a PE requirement, and comes with a $100 tuition remission for each year of participation. The band rehearses 5.5 hours per week and is a welcome break from the academic day for students of nearly every academic discipline.

BUMB Season

The marching band season normally ends in mid-November leaving students ample time to prepare for the end of the semester. The marching band is open to students of all majors. Students need only buy a pair of all-black marching shoes. Uniforms, guard equipment and instruments (if needed) are provided. More information can be found on the Resources Page.

Basketball Band

Butler vs. UTEP

The Basketball Band is 100+ members strong and contains some of Butler's most rabid fans. No band in our conference supports its teams any better! The play list for the group contains over 100 songs and produces a sound best described as a "50's-90's Ska/Swing/Pop/Rock & Roll band with a rather large horn section." The BUBB has twice been the host band for the NCAA Final Four and follows the Butler basketball teams during postseason play. The band supported our Bulldogs through their historic national championship run in 2010 and 2011, and BUBB is the reigning Final Four "Battle of the Bands" Champion.
