Meet the Director
Paul Sandin is the founding director of
Speakers Lab, and since fall of 1996 has been the guiding force
behind the success of this program. A strong believer in the
ability of students to organize, lead and be responsible for their
own educational experiences, Sandin made Speakers Lab student
governed in 1998. As a result, Butler University has received
national attention for the way Speakers Lab peer tutors have
claimed ownership of the program and its mission.
Professor Sandin is a full-time faculty member of the
Communication Studies department, and teaches courses in public
speaking, sports communication, business and professional
communication, communication ethics, communication leadership, and
communication consulting.
A native Ohioan, Professor Sandin moved to Indianapolis in 1972
to work on a graduate degree from Christian Theological Seminary -
completing it in 1975. His undergraduate degree is from Bethany
College in West Virginia.
Professor Sandin is co-author of "Communicating
Ethically", a major text in communication ethics, is co-author
of "The Competent Speaker", and has written articles on
baseball biographies for the New York Times. His article on Damon
Runyon is published in the Dictionary of Literary Biography: 20th
Century American Sportswriters.
Sandin is an avid golfer, and has reached "hacker" status after
years of practice. A former competitive baseball player, Professor
Sandin lives and dies with the Cleveland Indians each season.
