The Department of Sociology aspires to be a cornerstone program in the social sciences, emphasizing writing and critical thinking, analytical skills, computer literacy and an in depth understanding of the changing world. The department provides comprehensive coursework in sociology, preparing students for advanced study in graduate programs in this and other related disciplines. In addition, courses offered through the department satisfy part of the curricular needs of many students pursuing degrees in the professional colleges. Finally, the department cooperates with other departments in developing and enhancing interdisciplinary programs of mutual interest and actively participates in the social science curriculum of the general education program.

The sociology program enables the department to satisfy two primary goals of the University-to be an urban university and to expose students to multicultural issues-through a pursuit of excellence in the areas of teaching, research and community service.

Through teaching we seek to engage students in the consideration of major issues in sociology and to promote student awareness of the relevance of sociology for investigating and understanding social and cultural issues. Never before have social workers been more needed. Never has their educational training been so vital. Through student and faculty collaboration in research, we seek to enhance students' abilities to define and solve empirically based problems. The department thus seeks to immerse students in the urban community through carefully crafted teaching and research experiences and engage students and faculty in utilizing their expertise as sociologists, in community service while also looking beyond local issues to the international context.
