Sociology:
The science or study of the origin, history, and constitution
of human society; social science. Also, the study of
social organization and institutions and of collective
behavior and interaction, including the individual's
relationship to the group (Oxford English Dictionary).
Since all human behavior is social, the subject matter
of sociology ranges from the intimate family to the
hostile mob; from organized crime to religious cults;
from divisions of race and gender to the shared beliefs
of a common culture.
Sociology, criminology, social work and urban affairs
often are selected as majors for pre-professional study.
Whether you go straight to the work force, or on to
Graduate studies, Butler's Sociology department will
prepare you for the future. Take some time to look through
our site to see how we can help create your future.
