Prof. Carol F. Black

Adjunct Professor of Sociology

Research and Teaching Interests: Intersections of Race, Class and Gender; Grassroots Prison Reform efforts; Women's Interracial Friendship; Race and Ethnicity; Inequality; Sociology of AIDS; Social Problems.

Professor Black received her B.A. degree in 1997 and her M.S. degree in 2000, both from Purdue University in Sociology. She has taught Introduction to Sociology; Social Problems; Race and Ethnicity; Sociology of AIDS; Relationships and Family; Inequality; and Sports in Society. Her research pursuits always include the intersection of race, gender and class, and how those vary cross-culturally. She has completed work on gender depictions in children's picture books and how they vary by race and gender of illustrator; and women in interracial friendships. Her PhD dissertation is titled, "Working for Justice: Families and Prison Reform," and is an intersectional qualitative study of the prison reform efforts of six prison reform groups organized in five different states. These prison reform groups are composed largely of family members and friends of someone incarcerated.
