Families today have evolved way beyond "nuclear". Few of our students live with both biological parents. Indeed, families are now made up of step-parents and step-siblings, same-sex parents, parents in prison, grandparents as primary caregivers, adoptees, and children in foster care. This workshop endeavors to discuss the challenges these changes bring to our students and gathers practical ways to help them cope with society's attitudes and thrive. Lecture, discussion, experiential, and self-directed exploration.

An eating disorder can be acquired at any age and may be attributed to many different things including life events, stress, chemical addictions, and family dysfunctions. During this workshop we will look at many of the reasons an eating disorder may start and zero in on childhood eating disorders caused by stress and feelings of out of control within the family and peer involvement.

A healthy lifestyle can be fun and exciting. Join us in this institute as we explore nutrition, fitness and healthy habits. Discover how to teach health concepts using science and literacy as your foundation. A trip to a local food market, a visit from a nutritionist and a cooking class with a chef helps us examine fun ways to get students excited about making healthy choices. All participants receive a unit of study.

Dinosaur Science - Dinosaur Collecting Expedition for Teachers G 3 Credits

Join expedition leader and teacher Rick Crosslin on this dinosaur expedition for teachers designed to do the science that normally you only read about in your textbooks. Spend two days collecting fossils for The Children's Museum at the Ruth Mason Quarry - the largest fossil bed of duck-billed dinosaurs in the world. Then visit the Black Hills Geologic Institute and other sites.

This workshop will be held in South Dakota. Registration deadline is May 29.
Additional fee of $775/pp double occupancy, $995/pp single occupancy. Fee does not include transportation cost to South Dakota. Hotel cost and lunches on days out at the dig site are included. While in SD, transportation will be provided by museum staff. After registering with Butler, students must also register with Valerie Wells at (317) 334-4133. A $100 nonrefundable down payment is required at the time of registration.

Anne Frank was a typical young girl who found herself in the midst of war and persecution. Although she did not survive, Anne overcame hatred and left a positive message for future generations. Workshop participants receive a unit of study for grades 6 - 9 and have the opportunity to interact with Holocaust educators and survivors.

This institute focuses on the museum's ScienceWorks gallery including the Dock Shop, Construction Zone, Pond, the Biotechnology Learning Center and SciencePort. The five day institute prepares teachers in science inquiry, observation, scientific methods and will introduce the museum's investigation programs.
