Participants will learn how personality type and personal preferences affect career choices, communication, project approach, and relationships - both professional and personal. We will use the Myers Briggs Type Indicator to determine individual personality types. Through class discussion and hands on examples, we explore potential obstacles and the solutions to be successful.

This workshop explores the growing concern of self-injury among middle and high school students. Discussion will include: self-injury as a maladaptive coping strategy, common characteristics and behaviors, creating an action response plan as a school counselor, techniques and tools to use within the school setting, supporting parents and friends of self-injurers, ethical considerations, and referring to outside resources.

When students do not learn to read, write and spell by traditional approaches, other approaches based upon the unique student needs must be used. The Orton-Gillingham approach is diagnostic and prescriptive. Teachers will be provided criterion referenced tests for appropriate diagnosis and progress monitoring. The class will contain a 14 hour practicum and meets partial requirements of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators. This workshop is a practical, hands-on class that will give teachers the knowledge and experience of being successful in meeting the needs of the students who are hard to reach and teach.

Paleo Art: The Art and Science of Dinosaurs G 1 Credit

Meet dinosaur experts and paleo artists and discover how they work together and use similar processes to reconstruct the world of dinosaurs. See how Dinosphere® and Lanzendorf Art Gallery can inspire student art and science inquiry projects. All participants will create their own works of paleo art and receive a unit of study.

Build Your Own Camp Moodle G 3 Credits

Moodle is an open-source course management system that can be easily and effectively used to organize electronic resources and activities for classroom and/or online courses for students in all content areas. All participants will attend an opening day (June 9, 10 or 11) to examine Moodle courses created by other educators, develop an outline for their own course, and select which additional five courses they will take to help them create their own Moodle course to use in their own classroom. Grades will be issued at the end of Summer II session.

Participants will learn about and develop a "Family Literacy Backpacks" project in this make-it, take-it mini-camp. These thematic Backpacks are sent home with students to promote literacy at home along with interactive family learning. Time will be spent looking at materials made by past school participants in the project, development of goals and a management plan. A Family Night introduction to the project will also be highlighted. Ideas, templates and materials to start developing your own thematic Backpacks will be provided. Plan to develop 1-2 completed Backpacks and plans for further development of a full project to be implemented in your school. Online sharing of resources and materials is expected.

Participants exmine Egypt of the past and present and learn how students can become immersed in ancient and modern Egyptian life. Participants visit the Oriental Insitute of Chicago and have the opportunity to interact with Egyptologists and other experts on Egyptian culture. Participants receive a unit of study for grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.

Founded on the belief that training experiences should: focus on the individual strengths of each child, the process from assessment to goal development, involve blending strategies, incorporate hands-on application, present information in a didactic format followed by trainer modeling, trainee practice, and trainer feedback, and focus on widespread dissemination. Last assignment is due on Sept. 25, 2009, so grades will not be issued until Fall 2009.
