Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about parking on the Butler
University campus:
Is there less parking with the A-B-C-HV permits on
campus?
No - the change to a letter parking system allows for better
management of permits. The lot designation from previous years has
not been changed.
Why was there an increase in our 2010-11 parking
fee?
The committee established to review campus and neighborhood
parking looked at area universities, cost of our current program,
best practices, and capacity. Butler University has a low annual
parking rate which has to be supplemented for the expenses
associated with the operation and management of the
program.
What does my parking fee pay for?
The parking fees pays for enforcement, lot maintenance, lot
and curb markings, signs, traffic control devices, and
identification cards.
Why can't I park on certain neighborhood streets close
to campus?
Butler University is committed to working with the residents
of Butler-Tarkington. In the late 1980's a legal commitment was
entered into authorizing Butler to manage a stickered parking
system. This is compliant with Indiana Statute and in July 2010 the
City of Indianapolis Board of Public Works passed a resolution for
additional enforcement of parking on city-owned streets through
campus.
All students, faculty, and staff must register their
vehicles with Parking Services and park in designated areas. You
can locate the parking map by visiting: /media/836954/parkingallocationmap.pdf
Can I get a temporary pass after the parking services
office is closed?
Yes. Temporary passes for students, faculty, and staff can
be obtained 24 hours a day by visiting the University Police
Operations Center, located in the University Police building at 525
W. Hampton Drive. Please enter through the south door of the
building on the west side.
What kind of temporary passes are
available?
Temporary passes can be issued if your primary vehicle is
being worked on or unavailable that day due to another family
member using your vehicle. ADA passes can be issued upon receiving
documentation of need from your physician for a temporary medical
condition. Female students, faculty or staff members who are
pregnant or need special needs associated with their pregnancy are
eligible for a temporary pass as well.
I notice that some tickets are in green envelopes and
some in pink, what is the difference?
The dreaded green envelope is a Butler University parking
ticket. Those can be paid by visiting Student Accounts. Failure to
pay for any outstanding tickets may result in a delay for
registering for classes or obtaining official university
transcripts. To file an appeal of a university ticket, visit
here: http://www.formstack.com/forms/butler-parking_ticket_appeal
The pink envelope is a City of Indianapolis parking ticket.
It's important to note that officers from the Indianapolis
Metropolitan Police Department may receive parking complaints as
well. They have the authority to issue tickets and for more
information on payment of those tickets, visit:

Will certain lots be restricted for events?
Yes, certain university lots are subject to restrictions for
university athletic events, conferences, and community events.
Notice will be given and signs will be posted in the lots that are
restricted.
During peak hours on campus, is there an overflow lot I
can park?
Yes, the overflow lot is located at Hinkle Field House. This
lot is no more than a ten minute walk to the other side of campus.
All permits are valid. During athletic events, this lot may have
restrictions.
