Assessment Tools & Course Evaluations

Faculty at Butler understand that helping our students learn is a continual process, requiring a commitment to assessment and evaluation. One means of our continued focus in enhancing student learning is our annual academic assessment and the considered conversations by departments, programs, and colleges. Another means is the feedback we seek from students.

Student learning outcomes for departments and programs: Each department and program completes an annual assessment and revision of their student learning outcomes.

IDEA Course Evaluation: Provides the University a consistent means of evaluating courses and faculty, with a dual focus on evaluative and formative assessment.

Butler faculty complete an annual Faculty Activity Report to document their accomplishments in teaching, research, scholarships, and creative work, and service/leadership to the campus and community.

Understanding Your IDEA Center Course Evaluations

Fall 2011 Workshop - Wednesday, October 5, multiple session times, AU326

In response to faculty requests, we're bringing back an expert from the IDEA Center to help you understand how best to use the Summary Reports of your scores and how best to fine-tune (if necessary) the Objectives on the Faculty Information Form (FIF); they'll also be able to answer questions you might have about how scores are calculated.

Two sessions for faculty (9-10:30 a.m. or 2:30-4 p.m.) and one session for department heads/program directors (noon-1:30 p.m.) will be offered. Please plan to bring your Summary Reports as references. We'll have samples for new faculty. Steve Benton, PhD, Senior Research Officer from the IDEA Center and Professor Emeritus from Kansas State University, will lead the sessions.

Information on IDEA Center course evaluations is available online at www.theideacenter.org, including "Notes on Instruction," "Interpretive Guide on IDEA Diagnostic Form Report," and "Interpreting Adjusted Ratings of Outcomes."
