Joining Butler University
in August 2012, Gary R. Edgerton serves as the first permanent dean
of the College of Communication, which was founded in 2010. Prior
to Butler, Edgerton was professor and chair of Communication and
Theatre Arts at Old Dominion University. He also has taught at
Bowling Green State University and Goucher College before joining
Old Dominion. Edgerton earned his bachelor's degree in English and
history from College of the Holy Cross in 1974, and both his
master's degree (1979) and doctorate (1981) in communication from
the University of Massachusetts. He has received numerous awards
and honors, including Old Dominion University's 27th Annual
Research Award in Recognition of a Distinguished Scholarly Career.
Edgerton has published 10 books - with two more in the works - and
more than 75 essays. He also has delivered more than 100 conference
and keynote presentations, and averages two dozen commentaries a
year since 1990. Among other editorial affiliations, Edgerton
serves as co-executive editor of the Journal of Popular Film
and Television.
