In this course we will examine the roles of youth as local-global political actors through study of their participation in wars and other forms of political violence, in the global economy, and in peacebuilding in deeply divided societies. We will examine, among others, cases from Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the United States.

This course will examine the main components in the construction of a culture of peace, including sustainable integral human development, participatory democracy, human rights and the peaceful transformation of conflict. Among other selections, we will read and reflect on a preeminent collection of writings on these topics, La fuerza de la Palabra, by Federico Mayor Zaragoza, former Director General of UNESCO and President of the Fundacion Cultura de Paz based in Madrid. *This course is available only through the Butler Program at the University of Alcala in Alcala de Henares, Spain. Students may register for Spanish, Political Science or International Studies credit for this course
