ICIP - MODEL U.N. SECURITY

NOVEMBER 9-11, 2006

University of Indianapolis

ISSUES FOR DEBATE

While the issues debated will ultimately be determined and controlled by the delegates, we suggest that teams concentrate their preparation on the issue areas of

  • Crisis in Dharfur.
  • Nuclear Weapons and Iran
  • Children and Armed Conflict
  • Israel/Lebanon/Hizbollah
  • Israel and Hamas and the Future State of Palentine.

It is recommended, then, that delegates prepare themselves on these issues and on their country's positions on them.  Delegates are encouraged to bring with them one or more resolutions for consideration by the Council  These may have to be revised in caucus, of course, but a well prepared resolution provides a good basis for bargaining.  Examples of Security Council resolutions may be found in The UN Yearbook, The UN Chronicle, A Guide to Delegate Preparation and the UN Website. See http://www.butler.edu/polisci/modelun/links.html.

Some familiarity with the activities, history and rules of the United Nation and the Security Council is useful.  The following materials may be helpful, especially those marked with an (*) asterisk:

  • Bailey, Sydney.  The Procedure of the UN Security Council.
