History of Film Music, MH 453-01 (3 credits,
undergraduate or graduate)
May 13-30, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays,

Survey of film music from the early 20th-Century 'silents' to
the `Golden Age' (1933-1949), the `Silver Age' (1950-1980), and
contemporary films. Also included are studies of music for
animation (features, cartoons), 1930-1940's movie house serials,
experimental films and documentaries, `art films,' and 20th-century
European cinema (German, Italian, French, Japanese,
Scandinavian).

Established in a nurturing environment, "Creating Artistry"
offers an opportunity for conductors to further develop conducting
skills. Through individual and master class teaching, conductors
study Conducting Gesture, Vocal Techniques, Rehearsal Efficiency,
Pacing, Score Analysis, Repertoire, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Choral
Administration and Multicultural Interpretation. Laboratory
choruses provide the opportunity for participants to explore
actively the conducting processes.

Adult Big-Band Workshop, ME 580-03 (1 credit,

This class is designed for adult students with intermediate to
advanced instrument skills to participate in a true big band
experience, including daily rehearsals and a culminating
performance at The Jazz Kitchen. Improvisation experience is not
required but will be explored during the class. Hobbyists are
especially encouraged to join the class. Faculty may include Matt
Pivec and Mark Buselli. General information about the workshop may

Big-Band/Jazz Improv, Theory and Sightreading,
ME 580-04 (1 credit, graduate only)
July 21-26, 4:00-6:00 pm AND Sunday July 14, 2:00-5:00 pm

This class will explore the art of creating an improvised solo
by exploring chord/scale theory, rhythm, and listening examples.
Sightreading will focus on coping with the rigorous demands of jazz
rhythm, inflections, and articulations. Faculty may include Matt
Pivec, Gary Walters, and Mark Buselli. General information about

History of Rock and Roll, MH 454-01 (3 credits,
undergraduate or graduate)
July 29-August 16, Mondays through Fridays, 6:30-9:30 pm
Instructor: Frank Felice
This course investigates the roots of rock music (minstrel
shows, jazz, blues, etc.), provides an in-depth look at rock's
golden age (the 1950's) and introduces a number of rock's
subgenres, including the British Invasion, Motown/ Soul, Heavy
Metal, and Punk/ New Wave. Active listening and sociological/
historical perspectives are covered.
