Music at Butler Weekends

*Audition awards may not be available to prospective students auditioning after February 15, 2008, or for those whose academic admission is not finalized by March 1.

Prospective students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the Music at Butler weekend experience as part of the audition process. To schedule your audition and other Music at Butler Weekend activities please follow the application procedures outlined here. If you are unable to attend a Music at Butler Weekend and you need to schedule an individual visit to campus to audition, please contact the JCFA admission office at 800-368-6852, extension 9656.

Music Audition Requirements - Undergraduate

Brass and Woodwinds

Student should be prepared to play:
  • One movement or etude at a faster tempo displaying rhythmic and technical skills
  • One movement or etude at a slower tempo displaying lyrical playing (may be movements or large sections from the same work)
  • All major scales and a full range chromatic scale from memory, tongued and slurred (prepare all; committee will ask for specific scales)
  • Sight reading
  • Auditions are scheduled to last 20 minutes which includes time for discussion concerning the student's intended degree, career goals, background, etc.

An accompanist is recommended but not required; there is no penalty for not having an accompanist.

Composition

Students who plan to major in composition must schedule an interview/audition with the composition faculty. Students should bring with them 3-6 scores of original work; recordings of these pieces are recommended but not required.

Percussion

Be prepared to play the following:
  • Snare drum solo (concert or rudimental)
  • Mallet keyboard solo (two or four mallets)
  • Timpani solo
Other possibilities, such as drum set or multi-percussion, are optional. Each audition is scheduled for 30 minutes and includes an interview.

Piano as a Major Instrument in the following degrees: Piano Pedagogy, Composition, Music Education, Arts Administration, Bachelor of Arts

You will be asked to sight-read as part of this audition. Scales/arpeggios are not part of the audition. Plan to play from memory selections from at least two of the following areas:
  • J. S. Bach: Invention, Sinfonia or larger work
  • Classical sonata movement
  • Lyric work of the Romantic Period
  • 20th/21st century work

Piano Performance

You will be asked to sight-read as part of this audition. Applicants should plan to play from memory selections from at least three of the following areas:
  • J. S. Bach: Prelude and Fugue or larger work
  • Classical sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven
  • Significant work from the Romantic Period
  • Standard 20th century work

Strings

  • Be prepared to play for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Two contrasting pieces or movements are required; the pieces chosen do not have to be memorized.
  • Sight reading will be a part of all auditions.
  • Scales and accompaniment are not required.
  • Each audition is scheduled for 30 minutes and includes a short interview.

Voice

Be prepared to sing two songs from classical and/or traditional musical theatre repertoire. Your selections should be of contrasting style and most representative of your ability and training.
  • Memorization is required.
  • An accompanist is provided for all vocal auditions; however, the accompanist will not be available to warm up with the auditioners.
  • Sight reading may be a part of the vocal audition.
  • Each audition is scheduled for 15 minutes and includes a short interview.
  • Audition tapes are accepted by the voice faculty only if there are extenuating circumstances and usually are not considered for a talent award.
