Piano Pedagogy at Butler

Announcing the return of the BPPS

The Butler Piano Pedagogy Symposium was founded by Dr. Steve Roberson in 1985 and is designed to address topics of vital concern and interest to piano teachers at every level and setting. After a hiatus, the Symposium returns in 2008 with the same strong commitment to providing inspiration, discussion and dialogue on important issues and trends in our profession.

Symposium sessions begin each day at 9:00 a.m. in Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall in Robertson Hall. On-site registration is available at 8:30 a.m. Lunch is included in the symposium fee for those registrations that are received by July 14. For registrations received after July 14, lunch is on your own, either at a campus dining facility or off campus.

Featured clinician for 2008 is E.L. Lancaster. He will lead a master class for elementary students (who are attending Butler Piano Camp) and present three thought-provoking sessions:

  • Piano Students:  Are They Really Different Today?
This session will explore the changing lives of children in the 21st century and how this influences piano study.  Included are practical suggestions for curriculum development and lesson activities.
  • The Ears Have It:  Teaching Piano Students to Listen
A variety of ways to encourage students to listen to music will be demonstrated.  Practical activities for teaching ear training will be included as well as ways for students to listen to their own performances.
  • The Professional Piano Teacher in the 21st Century:  How Can I Keep Up?
This session will focus on how to juggle all the activities required of busy piano teachers.  Principles of time management will be addressed as well as how to keep up with professional activities, research in the field, new music and materials.

Housing for out-of-town participants is available in an air-conditioned dorm for $60 per night per room (single or double occupancy). The deadline to reserve dorm housing is July 1. Please contact Karen Thickstun (317/940-5500; kthickst@butler.edu) for more information about dorm housing. Several nearby hotels/motels are also available, about a 15-minute drive from campus. Click here for more information.

The Symposium fee of $75 is for non-credit attendance for 2 days and includes lunch (if registration received by July 14). A one-day option for $55 is also available. One credit hour of either undergraduate or graduate credit may be earned for Symposium attendance. All required forms for the credit option will need to be submitted by June 16; graduate credit option requires submission of an undergraduate transcript. For more information about credit options and procedures, please contact Steve Roberson (317/940-9961; sroberso@butler.edu).
