Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band

The Band Department at Butler consists of the Wind Ensemble, the Symphonic Band, the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo, the Marching Band, and the Basketball Band.

The Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Robert Grechesky, is the premier wind concert organization on campus, consisting of a select group of players in a smaller, generally one-on-a-part setting. The Wind Ensemble performs the finest examples of wind band repertoire from the Renaissance to the present, and has the flexibility of instrumentation to perform standard concert band repertoire such as Copland's Emblems and the Hindemith Symphony as well as smaller, chamber wind music such as the Stravinsky Octet for Winds and the Mozart serenades.

The Wind Ensemble plays several concert a year in magnificent Clowes Memorial Hall on the Butler campus, as well as concerts in other venues in the Indianapolis area. The group also tours regularly, having recently performed in such places as Vienna, Schladming, Austria, and St. Petersburg, Russia.

Admission to the Wind Ensemble is open to any university student by audition.

The Symphonic Band, conducted by Dr. Daniel P. Boiin, performs the finest in large band symphonic repertoire. Composers such as Holst, Vaughan Williams, Leonard Bernstein, Robert Jager and others are represented in the music played by the Symphonic Band.

The Symphonic Band performs in Clowes Hall and also offers concerts off campus throughout the year. The Symphonic Band presents a wonderful opportunity for any Butler student musician to come into contact with great music.

The Symphonic Band is open to any Butler student by audition.
