Cheryl E. West, music education,conducting

Cheryl WestProfessor Cheryl E. West, Adjunct Instructor in Music Education, earned both her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Indiana University in Music Education. Her duties at Butler include assisting with student teachers, advising the collegiate MENC chapter, coordinating the summer vocal jazz institute and fall vocal jazz festival, teaching general methods classes and co-directing the vocal jazz ensemble, Jordan Jazz. Professor West is a frequent guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator for All-State honor choirs, festivals, competitions, conferences, schools, community and church choirs. She is acclaimed for her artistic achievement and incredible rapport with young singers and her artistic skills at the piano. She also is a frequent presenter of sessions/performances at state and national conferences. Her major choral accomplishments include concert tours of Washington D.C., New York City, Europe, and the Peoples Republic of China, and three commissioned choral pieces. Performance honors include performing in Carnegie Hall, the Nation's Capital, Westminster Cathedral, the Great Wall of China and the Indiana Music Educators Association annual state convention. During the summers, she is chair of the vocal department for the Oak Hill Fine Arts Academy in Indianapolis.

Mrs. West continues her position as Educational Director for the Indiana Music Educators Association. She has extensively traveled to all corners of the state researching best practices of music education while being a true advocate of music education in the schools. She serves as a consultant to Indiana's music teachers and administrators by providing workshops and in-services to school corporations.

Previously to being Educational Director, Mrs. West was the Director of Choral Activities at Lawrence North High School, Lawrence Township for 18 years and received the Apple Award for Outstanding Teachers. Her professional affiliations include MENC/IMEA, ACDA/ICDA, NAJE AND SAI Music Fraternity. She in on the Board of Directors for the Butler University Music Leadership Institute and has also served on the Indiana University Alumni Board.
