Gary Walters, jazz and popular piano
Gary Walters is a graduate of Ball State University with a Bachelor of Science in Music
Education. He taught middle school band for five years while developing his performance career.
He has worked with a wide variety of local artists performing jazz, R&B, fusion, straight
ahead, bebop, country, southern gospel, rock n' roll oldies, etc. He has recorded and/or
performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Pops Series, Carrie Newcomer, Cathy Morris,
Steven Stollen, Jack Gilfoy, Nancy Davis Booth, the Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra,
Martha Reeves, The Crystals, The Coasters, the late Bobby Helms, Gaither Studios,
Hal Leonard Publishing, Bennett Innovations, and touring Broadway Shows. He has written,
arranged or transcribed for the late J.J. Johnson, Simon Malls, Bobby Helms, Sandy Patti, the
1991 World Gymnastics Games and many other local artists. He was co-owner of a recording
studio and booking agency from 1990-1999. He is a member of American Federation of Musicians
Union Local 3, the International Association of Jazz Educators, the Fine Arts Society, and a founding member and past president of the
Indianapolis Jazz Foundation. He has taught applied lessons in jazz and popular piano
techniques at Butler since 1999.
