Malcolm Smith, oboe

Dr. Malcom Wayne Smith has been Principal Oboe of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Adjunct Instructor of Oboe at the Jordan College of Fine Arts at Butler University since 1973. Dr. Smith, a native of Lawrence, Kansas, received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Kansas. He entered the Juilliard School, earned his Master of Science degree, and then was admitted to the first Doctor of Musical Arts class at the school and graduated in 1970. While attending Juilliard, he studied oboe with Harold Gomberg and was Principal Oboe of the Juilliard Orchestra for three years under Jean Morel.

Before arriving in Indianapolis, Dr. Smith served as Principal Oboe of the following orchestras: Vermont State Symphony Orchestra, the Great Neck Symphony Orchestra, the Village Light Opera, the Lake George Opera Festival (nine seasons), and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (four seasons, Henry Lewis, music director).

He has appeared many times as soloist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, with other performing organizations in Indianapolis, and has given recitals around the country, including Carnegie Recital Hall.

Dr. Smith began teaching private oboe lessons while he was a student in New York City. He was a member of the faculty of Wagner College, the University of Indianapolis and a Visiting Professor at Indiana University.

His students have gone on to pursue advanced degrees at Northwestern University, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the New England Conservatory of Music, the Eastman School of Music, the Manhattan School of Music and the Juilliard School. These students can be found teaching in high schools, universities and performing in orchestras around the world.
