Dr. Michelle Louer, Director of University Choir (adjunct, spring 2008)

Michelle LouerMichelle brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the podium and classroom. She maintains an active career as a choral and orchestral conductor, music educator, clinician, adjudicator and scholar. Formerly an Assistant Professor of Conducting and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Evansville, Louer conducted the University Choir, the Women’s Chorus and the Men’s Ensemble. She also previously served as Interim Director of Choral Activities and Visiting Assistant Professor of Choral Music at Oklahoma City University. Michelle was appointed Artistic Director and Conductor of the Kokomo Symphony in 2003 and led the orchestra for three seasons.

She is currently the Director of Music and Fine Arts at Second Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis, where she conducts the 70-member Sanctuary Choir, the Beecher Singers (an auditioned semi-professional chamber ensemble) and Y.E.S. (Youth Ensemble @ Second), as well as the professional Festival Orchestra and Second Presbyterian Brass Ensemble. She oversees the children’s music program, adult handbell ensemble and a growing visual and dramatic arts department.

As a Chancellor’s Fellow and Associate Instructor for the Choral Department at Indiana University she taught courses in undergraduate conducting. While a student at IU she conducted numerous ensembles, including the Symphonic Choir, the University Singers, the University Chorale, the Opera Chorus, and the Contemporary Vocal Ensemble.

Louer graduated summa cum laude from Yale University with a Master of Music in Choral Conducting and a Master of Divinity. She conducted the University Chapel Choir and was the Assistant Conductor of the Yale Camerata and the Pro Musica Chamber Singers. She received a Bachelor of Music from Stetson University, where she graduated magna cum laude with a double major in Piano Performance and Church Music.

Michelle is regularly invited to be a guest conductor, most recently conducting the Lafayette Bach Chorale Singers where the Lafayette Journal noted, “Her apparent ease before both orchestra and chorus produced an exquisite choral sound and a musically nuanced pair of performed works.”

As a rising scholar in the choral field, Michelle has presented papers at both the College Music Society’s Northeast and Great Lakes Regional Conferences.

Her principal teachers in choral conducting include Jan Harrington, Thomas Dunn, Carmen Téllez, Fiora Contino, Robert Porco and Marguerite Brooks. She was selected to participate in the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra Workshop for Conductors, Chorus America’s Choral/Orchestral Conducting Workshop with John Alexander and the Vancouver Chamber Choir’s National Conductors’ Symposium. She has participated in workshops and masterclasses with Marin Alsop, Gustav Meier, Tõnu Kaljuste, Paul Hillier and Gary Wedow.
