Dr. Gail Lewis, French horn, music theory
Dr. Gail Lewis joined the faculty of the Jordan College of Fine Arts at Butler University in
1997, as Assistant Professor of Horn and Music Theory. She has also served as Assistant Professor
of Horn and Music Theory at the Columbus State University (Georgia), and as Instructor of Horn at
the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. She received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in performance
from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, the Master of Music degree in performance from the
Eastman School of Music, and the Bachelor of Music in performance and music theory from Capital
University in Columbus, Ohio. Her principal teachers have included Douglas Hill, Verne Reynolds,
Froydis Ree Wekre, and Nicholas Perrini.
She has maintained an active schedule as a freelance performer with orchestras and chamber groups
throughout the Southeast and the Midwest, including the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the
Symphony Orchestras of Evansville, LaFayette and Kokomo Indiana, Owensboro Kentucky, Columbus,
Macon, Albany, and Valdosta Georgia, Greenville and Charleston South Carolina, Oshkosh and
Madison Wisconsin, and Dubuque Iowa. She performs extensively with many chamber groups such as
the Resurrection Brass Quintet, Monument City Brass Quintet, White River Brass Quintet, the
Indianapolis Brass Choir, and is a former member of the Southwind Woodwind Quintet and the
Fountain City Horn Quartet. She is also in demand as a studio musician at various recording
studios in Indianapolis. She has presented solo and chamber recitals in Indiana, Georgia,
Missouri, New Jersey, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
Dr. Lewis conducts clinics and master classes at many high schools in Indiana, presents programs
through the auspices of the Young Audiences of Indiana organization, and participates in clinics
presented for high school students at Huntington College and Butler University. She has also
presented clinics and concerts at the Georgia Music Educators Association annual conference in
Savannah. Dr. Lewis is active with students of all ages through summer programs which have
included the Southeastern Music Center and the University of Wisconsin Summer Music Clinic, and
has participated in teaching courses in the Elderhostel music program for senior citizens. She
maintains a private teaching studio, which currently includes horn students from the fifth grade
through age 65.
She is currently pursuing a new interest in playing and researching the alphorn. Additionally,
he explores the art of homebrewing beer, and in the summers enjoys backpacking, canoeing, and
hiking with her dog Hershey.
