Dr. Andrea Gullickson,
chair of the School of Music
Dr. Andrea Gullickson was appointed chair of the School of Music in 2006. As an oboist she maintains an active performance schedule with chamber music, solo recital and concerto appearances throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Passionate and creative music-making has won her universal critical acclaim from both press and audience members. Reviewers find her performances marked by "passages of ghostly beauty played with transparent grace" (Santa Barbara Independent), and note that "she plays with a beautiful sense of line and shape" (Journal of the International Double Reed) and a "big colorful sound that she uses to make clear-headed, decisive statements" (Milwaukee Journal Sentinal).
Recent concert engagements have included solo and chamber music performances at the Rimsky-Korsakov National Conservatory (St. Petersburg, Russia), National Museum for Women in Arts (Washington, D.C.), the Wuhan Conservatory of Music (Wuhan, China), the Banff Centre for the Arts, and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Her first solo CD, The Poetic Oboe, was released by Crystal Records in 2004. The reviewer for Fanfare describes her playing as "...some of the finest I have heard. Her tone is pure, focused, and unforced - perfectly natural sounding and effortless." Dr. Gullickson's latest CD, Down A River of Time, is a collection of oboe concertos recorded with the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra and is forthcoming on the Cala label.
Dr. Gullickson is a founding member of the highly acclaimed chamber ensemble, WiZARDS! A Double Reed Consort. Dedicated to the expansion of the body of double reed repertoire known and performed today, WiZARDS! has amassed a library of more than four hundred double reed compositions; presented concerts and master classes in eighteen states, has been featured on numerous public television and public radio programs including NPR's Performance Today, developed innovative educational programs that have led to residencies funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, and released four CDs on the Crystal, Boston and CRS labels. Reviewers' remarks include: "beautiful, flavorful, colorful sounds.faultless playing" (American Record Guide), "That the playing is pretty miraculous is clear from start to finish. Originally from Walhalla, North Dakota, Dr. Gullickson holds degrees from Michigan State University, Northwestern University and the University of Iowa. She is the recipient of grants for her research in eighteenth-century music and the oboe d'amore, and plays an active role in the performance and promotion of new works.
Prior to joining the faculty at Butler University, Dr. Gullickson served as professor of music and chair of the School of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, where she held the Oshkosh Northwestern Endowed Professorship and received the university's most prestigious award, the John McNaughton Rosebush Professorship, granted for excellence in teaching, professional achievement, and public service.
