Dr. Jeffrey Gillespie, music theory
Dr. Gillespie, who joined the Butler faculty in 1996, earned a Ph.D. in music theory from
Indiana University in 1996, specializing in the areas of theory pedagogy and aural skills. His
dissertation is titled "Difficulty Factors in the Perception of Melodies by Skilled Listeners."
He has held previous teaching positions at Indiana University and St. Ambrose University in
Davenport, Iowa. Additional degrees are a Master of Arts in music theory from the Eastman School
of Music and a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from Birmingham-Southern College.
Dr. Gillespie has published in the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, Integral and the Indiana
Theory Review, and has presented papers at several national music conferences. Dr. Gillespie is
also an experienced pianist, organist, and choral conductor with extensive background in church
music.
