Dr. Elizabeth Smith, music theory

Dr. Elizabeth Smith joined the Butler School of Music as a visiting assistant professor of music theory in 2007. She hold a Ph.D and a master of music in music theory from The Florida State University and a bachelor's in music theory and composition from Illinois State University. She was previously assistant professor of music theory at Ithaca College.

Dr. Smith has presented her work at the national meeting of the Society for Music Theory and at the International Ernst von Dohnányi Festival coorinated with the annual meeting of Music Theory Southeast. Her research has also been showcased by South Central Society for Music Theory, Florida State Music Theory Forum, and McGill Graduate Student Society Symposium. She contributes analytical essays for Netherland's non-profit group "Opera in Progress." Dr. Smith is a member of the Society for Music Theory and the College Music Society.


Butler music department
