Jon Crabiel, percussion

Artist-in-Residence in Percussion at Butler University's Jordan College of the Arts School of Music, Jon Crabiel serves as head of the percussion studies program, conducts the university percussion ensemble and steel drum ensembles and teaches courses in percussion pedagogy and world drumming. In addition, Mr. Crabiel serves as director and instructor of the Butler Percussion Camp held every June at Butler University.

Mr. Crabiel is J. Crabiela regular extra percussionist/drum set and timpanist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and has toured with the River City Brass Band. In addition he served as Principal Timpani at Bear Valley Music Festival and has performed with Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, Ft. Wayne Philharmonic, Empire Brass, Ronen Chamber Ensemble, and Dance Kaleidoscope.

Mr. Crabiel has performed under the baton of Krzystof Urbanski, Mario Venzago, Jahja Ling, Marvin Hamlisch, Jack Everly, and Erich Kunzel and performed on stage with artists Michael Cavanaugh, Dennis De Young, Michael Feinstein, Kenny G, Art Garfunkel, Amy Grant, Bobby McFerrin, Sandi Patty, Joshua Radin, Doc Severinsen and Time For Three. In addition to classical music, Mr. Crabiel is equally versed in rock, pop, jazz, fusion, Latin American and Brazilian percussion and drum set. He is a member of The Icarus Ensemble, an eclectic 5 piece jazz group made up of members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The Icarus Ensemble recently performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in concert as guest artist at the Hilbert Circle Theatre.Jon Crabiel

He studied as an Artist Diploma candidate at Carnegie Mellon University and received both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts degrees from Eastern Illinois University. His past teachers include: Timothy Adams, Jr. and Professor Johnny Lee Lane.

An active performer, clinician and educator, Mr. Crabiel serves annually as percussion coach of the Music For All Honor Orchestra of America and Masterclass Clinician for the Music For All National Concert Festival. He has served on faculty of the United States Percussion Camp, Mid West Percussion Camp, Las Vegas Percussion Camp, Great Lakes Music Camp and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. Mr. Crabiel has presented clinics for Music For All National Concert Festival and Summer Symposium presented by Yamaha, Bands of America, Percussive Arts Society Indiana Day of Percussion, Indiana Music Educators Association Convention, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Indiana Percussion Association, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Symphony In Color, Children's Museum of Indianapolis Drumbeats exhibit and numerous universities. Jon is an active studio musician and he has made solo performances with the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, Butler Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Percussive Arts Society International Convention, Midwest Band and Orchestra International Conference and the Indiana Music Educators Association Convention.

Jon Crabiel's students have received numerous Butler University Concerto Competition honors and his former students are currently performing with major orchestras, touring nationally and internationally with Broadway shows and teaching at universities in North America. Jon is a Yamaha Performing Artist and is an endorser of Yamaha Drums and Percussion, Vic Firth Drumsticks and Mallets, REMO Drumheads and Paiste Cymbals and Gongs. Jon resides in Indianapolis with his incredible wife and 10-year-old son.
