Italian at Butler

The Colosseum in RomeIn 2002 the department of Modern Languages, Literatures & Cultures introduced the new Italian minor to our multilingual program offerings. With the native expertise of Professor Elisa Lucchi-R, who even has her own Fan Club on Facebook, the Italian program is flourishing, both in the classroom and out. Students who minor in Italian will become acquainted with the local Italian community at pasta dinner night, or at the Italian Carnival celebration. As an Italian minoryou will have a vast array of resources available to you in our Modern Language Center, where you can watch the latest Italian films or browse the up-to-date Italian magazine collection . The Italian courses have been a magnet for Butler faculty, so you might see your Chemistry professor in the next row, or the head librarian in the Italian opera you attend with your classmates. As an Italian minor you will quickly learn that Italian is spoken in many countries other than Italy, including Switzerland, Malta, Argentina, Mexico, Libya, and Somalia. It is an official language of Switzerland and the European Union, as well as of Slovenia and Vatican City. There are 70 million Italian-speakers around the world waiting to talk to you! Students who minor in Italian complete at least six credits of coursework while studying abroad. They study in places like Florence, Rome, and Perugia, where students can immerse themselves in the rich Italian culture while completing the credits for the Italian minor. A minor in Italian makes an excellent pairing with a major in the following disciplines: Art History, Music, Theatre, Anthropology, Journalism, or International Studies.
