Italian at Butler
In 2002 the department of Modern
Languages, Literatures & Cultures introduced the new Italian
minor to our multilingual program offerings. With the native
expertise of Professor Elisa Lucchi-R, who even has her own Fan Club
on Facebook, the Italian program is flourishing, both in the
classroom and out. Students who minor in Italian will become
acquainted with the local Italian community at pasta dinner night,
or at the Italian Carnival celebration. As an Italian minoryou will
have a vast array of resources available to you in our Modern
Language Center, where you can watch the latest Italian films or
browse the up-to-date Italian magazine collection . The Italian
courses have been a magnet for Butler faculty, so you might see
your Chemistry professor in the next row, or the head librarian in
the Italian opera you attend with your classmates. As an Italian
minor you will quickly learn that Italian is spoken in many
countries other than Italy, including Switzerland, Malta,
Argentina, Mexico, Libya, and Somalia. It is an official language
of Switzerland and the European Union, as well as of Slovenia and
Vatican City. There are 70 million Italian-speakers around the
world waiting to talk to you! Students who minor in Italian
complete at least six credits of coursework while studying abroad.
They study in places like Florence, Rome, and Perugia, where
students can immerse themselves in the rich Italian culture while
completing the credits for the Italian minor. A minor in Italian
makes an excellent pairing with a major in the following
disciplines: Art History, Music, Theatre, Anthropology, Journalism, or International Studies.
