Requirements for a Major in French
A major in French consists of 33 hours in the language, at least
24 of these hours being on the 300 and 400 (upper division) levels.
Students are to include in these upper division hours at least one
three-hour course in each of the following areas: language skills,
literature, and civilization (see categories below) and at least
two courses on the 400 level in French.
To increase fluency, all upper division courses are conducted
completely in French, but one course, designated FL (given in
English), may be part of a language major with approval of the
department head.
Advanced placement credits in French and credits earned in an
approved study abroad program count toward majors in French.
Students who major in French normally include study abroad in their
programs.
