Mandarin Chinese at Butler

Image China The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures & Cultures began offering Mandarin Chinese in the fall of 2000 taught at three levels - Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Since then, enrollment has increased 60%, primarily due to China's growing importance in the global economy.

After completing two years of study, students have had the opportunity for a six-week Summer Chinese Language and Culture Program in China or Taiwan. In addition to classroom instruction and one-on-one tutoring, excursions, such as the Forbidden City, Xi'an, the Great Wall etc., have been arranged to provide the opportunity to experience various social contexts, visit historical sites, and have great fun.

Chinese Culture and Chinese Civilization courses, in English, have been offered to promote understanding of the history, culture, customs, society and people. Many students love learning Chinese calligraphy.

Students are encouraged to interact with the Chinese community in Indianapolis by participating in events or functions that are presented by various Chinese organizations.

Who takes Chinese at Butler? Students majoring in International Studies, International Management, History, Anthropology, Political Science, Business, Religious Studies, Pharmacy, English, Biology, Computer Science, Education, Music, Theater, and many more.

Learning Chinese IS CHALLENGING. But many Butler students chose to add a Chinese minor to their studies. Are you up to the challenge?
