Modern Languages at Butler

Who We Are and What We Do

Terri Rettig standing in an ornate doorway The department of Modern Languages, Literatures & Cultures prepares students to live and work in an increasingly complex society.

Our students acquire insight into and a systematic knowledge of other languages and cultures so that they can develop an understanding and appreciation of other peoples. Our students develop and practice the linguistic and cognitive skills required to succeed in today's global community. Our students learn to recognize and respect cultural differences, and to adapt to and participate in diverse cultural environments.

In courses, extracurricular activities and through a wide variety of study abroad opportunities, our students gain broader awareness of the world and their place within it. They work alongside our faculty to prepare for lifelong cross-cultural interactions. Our program offers to students from all of Butler’s five colleges opportunities to train for a wide variety of careers or for graduate or professional study.
