E-Reserves (Electronic Reserves)
E-Reserves Forms - available online:
The Reserve Request Form cannot be accepted unless it is filled
out completely. This means full citation information for each item
you need placed on reserve. In addition, due to the large numbers
of requests that we process, we cannot accept course syllabi as
substitutes for a completed Reserve Request Form.
- Download an E-Reserves
Request Form in MS Word.
Note: To save a document, right-click (with a PC)
and choose "Save Target As..."
- Print an E-Reserves
Request Form in PDF format.
- Submit paper copies, as clean as possible (no staples,
paperclips only), to a staff member at the Irwin Library
Circulation Desk, or submit electronic documents directly to Laina
Ridenour (lridenou@butler.edu). You
may electronically submit documents in: HTML, PDF, Microsoft Word,
Excel, or PowerPoint.
The purpose of E-Reserves is to provide multiple simultaneous
users access to materials in addition to the print Reserves
collection. E-Reserves is password restricted to Butler University
students and faculty for non-commercial, educational use by
students.
E-Reserves Policy
The Butler University Libraries' policy for the E-Reserves
service is derived from the fair use provisions of United States
Copyright Act, Title 17. We make every effort to ensure that
submissions are in compliance with the spirit of the law. The
copyright notice appears when using E-Reserves.
Faculty Guidelines
- The following are guidelines concerning articles and book
chapters that are placed on E-Reserves:
- A maximum of two articles can be accepted for e-reserves from
any single journal issue which is owned by the libraries.
- A maximum of one article can be accepted for e-reserves from
any single journal issue which is not owned by the libraries.
- For in-print titles, no more than a single part (chapter), or a
maximum of 5% of work, whichever is smaller, will be scanned for
e-reserves. Percentages are based upon the total number of pages in
the volume.
- No more than 10% of an out-of-print book can be accepted for
e-reserves. Percentages are based upon the total number of pages in
the volume.
- Each semester, fill out an E-Reserves Submission Form with the
faculty name, department, course and section numbers, title frame,
and FULL bibliographic information. Please send this to Laina
Ridenour (lridenou@butler.edu) or with
the paper copies.
- Materials will be processed on a first come-first serve basis
within 48 hours (Monday through Friday).
- Reserve requests submitted without an E-Reserves
Request Form may take longer than a week to process (dependent upon
if we are able to contact the submitter for
clarification).
- Unless specified on the Reserve Request Form, all items will be
removed from the Reserve collection at the end of each
semester.
- If the E-Reserves system is down, paper copies of the
E-Reserves documents are available as a back up at the Irwin
Library Circulation Desk.
- Items submitted will NOT be returned. Please only submit copies
that the library can keep.
- Upon receiving e-mail confirmation that a submission is posted,
faculty are encouraged to review their course E-Reserves for
accuracy. Mistakes, questions, or other concerns should be brought
to the attention of Laina Ridenour at 940-9532, lridenou@butler.edu.
**The electronic copying and scanning of copyright-protected
works for library reserve service are unsettled areas of the law
which may be addressed by the Courts or in future revisions of the
copyright law. The Butler University Libraries will monitor legal
developments, which may affect the fair use analysis of electronic
reserves service, to ensure that library services are in compliance
with the letter and spirit of the United States Copyright
Law.**
