Interlibrary Loan Tips
Following these tips can speed up the turnaround time for
Interlibrary Loan Processing.
Obtaining an ILLiad
account
- The home library should be selected with care. Selection of
home (Irwin or Science) library should be determined by field of
study. This will be where you pick up any items that do not come in
the electronic format.
- When submitting a User Profile to obtain an ILLiad Interlibrary
Loan account, always list a Butler email address.
Butler email is the official communicating tool used by the
University. No other email accounts (Yahoo, Hotmail,
Gmail, etc.) will be accepted.
- All documents are delivered electronically. When selecting
Electronic Delivery, yes or no, always choose yes.
Filing
an ILL Request
- File ILL requests directly from an electronic database (World
Cat, EBSCO, etc.) whenever possible. This limits mistakes made in
entering information into the request. Use the SFX Find It! button
whenever available.
- Check the Butler Library Catalog and journal holding in the
Citation Linker before filing any ILL requests. Databases do not
always accurately reflect Butlers holdings.
- Be discriminating when it comes to requesting items through
ILL. Even though students, graduate students, staff and faculty are
not charged for the Interlibrary Loan Service, it can be very
costly. When someone orders materials and then never picks them up,
or orders needlessly, it jeopardizes the standard of keeping this
service free to all users.
- Please limit the number of dissertations you request. Often
there is only one copy available and many libraries will not
circulate that copy through ILL.
- Interlibrary Loans normally takes up to 14 days to arrive;
length of time determined by shipping methods of the lending
library. Most journal articles usually arrive within 3-4 days but
can take longer, also depending on the lending library.
Renewing ILL Requests
Interlibrary Loan Policies
Interlibrary Loan Fees
The library absorbs all the costs connected with borrowing
material through ILL. However, if a book is overdue for more than
one month, the borrower will be expected to pay replacement costs
for the book. Patrons are also responsible for all charges
resulting in damaged or lost materials.
Loan
Length
Lending libraries set their own loan periods (usually 3-4
weeks). All loans must be returned by the due date or renewed date.
Turning items in late jeopardizes Butler's borrowing relationship
with other libraries. Failure to return loans on time can
result in being blocked from using ILLiad, or being blocked from
using Butler University libraries.
