Circulation Policies: Special Borrowers
PALNI, ALI, and Community Borrowers
The Butler University Libraries honor the PALNI (Private Academic Library Network of Indiana)
Cooperation Agreement by extending borrowing privilege to students,
faculty and staff members from any of the 25 PALNI institutions.
(Butler faculty members and students can do the same in other PALNI
libraries.) PALNI borrowers must present a valid identification
card from their home institution in order to check out materials
from the Butler University Libraries.
The Butler University Libraries honor the ALI (Academic
Libraries of Indiana) Reciprocal Agreement by extending
borrowing privilege to students, faculty and staff members from any
of the participating ALI institutions. (Butler faculty members and
students can do the same in other ALI libraries.) ALI borrowers
must present a valid identification card from their home
institution as well as an ALI card issued by their home library in
order to check out materials from the Butler University
Libraries.
The general public may visit the Butler University Libraries and
read or browse the collections. Those who live in Marion,
Hendricks, Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Shelby, and Johnson counties
may receive borrowing privileges for one year for a fee of $50.

Computer Use
Librarians are available to help patrons search for information.
Due to licensing arrangements and student fees we cannot provide
Special Borrower access to electronic database or general Internet
browsing.
Please read our Computer Use Policy for more
information.
Overdue Notices and Late Fees
Special Borrowers will receive overdue notices by e-mail twice
before the item is declared lost.
Daily late fees have been replaced by a flat rate of $10 for
items more than two weeks late.
Lost Materials
Once library materials are declared lost a bill will be e-mailed
to the patron. Patrons will have to pay the replacement cost
(ranging from $25 - $100 or more), plus a $10.00 late fee per item.
The patron's library account will be blocked until the bill has
been settled.
After having been billed, if the library materials are returned
undamaged by the end of the semester during which the bill was
sent, then the patron's account will be credited the replacement
costs and the patron will only be required to pay the late
fees.
Renewals, Holds and Recalls
Renewals, holds, and recalls may be made at the Circulation
Desks, by telephone or e-mail:
You can also place a renewal or hold via
My Library Card.
Holds
A hold means that you will notified as soon as your requested
item is returned. If your need is immediate please ask that your
item be recalled.
Recall Policy
When other patrons place a recall request on items that are
checked out, the requested materials will be recalled by the
Libraries within 3 to 7 days, depending on the circulation status
of the materials.
Returns
After-hour book drops are available at both libraries by the
main entrances.
