All graduate students currently enrolled at Butler University are eligible to check out materials from the Butler University Libraries. Borrowers must present a valid ID card at the Circulation Desk when checking out materials. Browsing books are limited to a maximum of 10 items checked out at one time.

Overdue Notices and Late Fees

Overdue notices will be emailed to students twice before an item is declared lost. To ensure a timely return of books and to avoid fees for lost materials, students are encouraged to monitor their due-dates via  My Library Card.

To review our overdues policy please see our Overdues Policy and Procedures page.

Lost Materials

Once library materials are declared lost a bill will be e-mailed to the student and to Student Accounts. Students will have to pay the replacement cost (ranging from $25 - $100 or more). If the bill is greater than $195.00 a department requested hold will be placed on the student's account and will not be lifted until the bill is settled.

After having been billed, if the library materials are returned undamaged by the end of the semester during which the bill was sent, then the student's account will be credited the replacement costs and the student will only be required to pay the late fees.

Renewals, Holds, and Recalls

Renewals, holds, and recalls may be made online using WorldCat Discovery, at the Information Commons and Circulation Desks, by telephone or e-mail:

You can also place a renewal or hold via WorldCat Discovery, the Butler library catalog.

A patron may place an item on hold through the library's online catalog only if the item is currently checked out. When the item is available, the patron will be contacted by email and the item will be held for him/her at the desk under his/her name.

Items found through the use of a missing item form will also be placed on hold for the patron.

Requested new books will also be placed on hold.

Items from the general collection will have a Holds Shelf Life of one week; items from the reference and reserve collection are unavailable for hold.

If your need is immediate please ask that your item be recalled.

Recall Policy

When patrons ask that an item be recalled, the requested materials will be recalled by the Libraries within three to seven days, depending on the circulation status of the materials.

After-hour book drops are available at both libraries by the main entrances. Reserve items must be returned directly to the Information Commons or Circulation Desk.
