Technical Services Department

Mission and Purpose

It is the mission of Technical Services to acquire, make available, and maintain bibliographic control of the materials that support the educational and research needs of Butler University's students and faculty.

The goals of Technical Services are to:

  • Acquire items of all formats as requested by faculty and librarians; manage book and other materials budgets for the Libraries.
  • Catalog and physically process all items; maintain the online catalog and other bibliographic tools that help users identify and locate materials.
  • Initiate and manage subscriptions to print and non-print serials and electronic databases, provide access to detailed holdings information.

The strategies utilized to carry out this mission include:

  • Order, receive, and process payment for materials in a timely and accurate manner; track cost and invoicing information in the online system throughout acquisitions process.
  • Catalog and process materials in all formats in a timely fashion; maintain a quality bibliographic database and adhere to local and national standards.
  • Process gift materials, government documents, transfers, withdrawals, and other changes to the collection in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintain awareness of current trends in Acquisitions, Cataloging, and Serials; implement change when necessary.
  • Maintain Aleph, the Libraries' integrated library system, to provide staff the tools necessary to meet the information needs of students.
  • Work with other departments of the Libraries to coordinate functions and streamline processes.
