What students need to know about internships
What is an internship?
An internship is a short-term work experience in a professional environment where the emphasis is on learning. It is a chance for you to be immersed in the world of work under the guidance of a mentor (employer) and faculty member who will create a real world classroom for you.

How does an internship differ from a job?
In an internship, the student's supervisor at work will serve as a mentor, not just a boss. While students in most internships will perform general office duties, the student will usually have a project to finish by the end of the internship.

Are internships paid?
The majority of LAS internships are not paid. The main purpose of an internship is to provide students with work experience in their field before they graduate, preparing them for the competitive job market they will enter upon graduation. Internships also help students to learn the correlation of their academic work to a job, and to participate in a helpful mentor/mentee relationship. This is an important distinction between internships and part-time jobs. Besides, one would not expect to receive pay for enrolling in a for-credit class taught at Butler: why should a student receive pay for enrolling in an internship course in which they receive credit?

Are internships available to LAS students?
Absolutely! In the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, about 75 percent of our students participate in an internship before they graduate.

When do students intern?
The majority of LAS students participate in internships during their junior or senior year. Employers usually prefer more mature students who have had a couple of years of classes under their belt. However, opportunities are available for freshmen and sophomores as well. Internships are available during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

How does a student receive credit for an internship?

Each department in LAS has different academic requirements for internships, so it is imperative that the student find out what these requirements are before she starts her internship. You can find internship requirements by following the links below to the appropriate department. If a student wishes to receive credit for an internship (as the majority do), she should meet with her departmental internship advisor as soon as she decides she wants to intern (Ideally, at least two semesters prior to the start of the internshp). Together, they can decide which semester would be best for her to do an internship, how many credits she should receive for her internship, and what academic work will be required of her in order to receive credit for the internship.

When should a student start searching for an internship?
While every internship follows a particular timeline, for most, a student should start the search process at the beginning of the semester prior to when he wants to intern. Applications should be submitted during the middle of that semester unless otherwise stated by the employer. Below is a general timeline for internships:
