How can Liberal Arts Works help my company?

One function of Liberal Arts Works, housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS), is to personally assist students with their internship search. Liberal Arts Works coordinates with various LAS departments and Career Services to hold internship information sessions, meet with students individually to discuss internship options and resumes, and to conduct site visits. When considering the hire of an intern, keep in mind the following:

“ Liberal arts degrees teach invaluable critical thinking skills, an asset that Tom Emmick, vice president of Eli Lilly & Co.’s Research Labs, looks for in job candidates. ‘The number one thing that is important to me in employees is the ability to think your way through complex problems.’ ”
-- excerpt from Liberal Arts Career News Volume VII, Issue 2

As an intern, a Liberal Arts and Sciences major at Butler has an academic foundation to do the following for your company/organization:
- Communicate effectively and objectively with minimum errors.
- Critically research and analyze a problem or project.
- Cope with deadlines, last minute changes, diverse personalities and other work pressures.
- Keep a schedule, manage her/his time, and work independently.
- Ask questions in order to get the job done right.
- Analyze the interrelationships of ideas, problems, events, and people with a broad perspective.
- Creatively apply knowledge to specific problems or tasks.

While these are some of the many skills applicable to all LAS majors, Liberal Arts Works also places students according to their academic field: Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Communication Studies, Computer Sciences, Criminal Justice, English, French, German, History, International Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Science, Technology & Society, and Spanish.

Here are some characteristics common to internships in the above majors:

- Students earn anywhere from three to nine hours of credit for their work, depending on their department’s requirements. Academic credit is coordinated by department, through the faculty internship advisor.

- Students are expected to spend no more than 40% of their internship doing “grunt work”, ie. copying, filing, collating.

- An evaluation of the intern’s performance by her/his supervisor and a site visit may be required.

Here are some examples of recent LAS internships:
- Anthropology majors have interned at the Eiteljorg Museum, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and the Exodus Refugee Center.

- Chemistry majors have interned at Eli Lilly and Dow Agrosciences.

- English majors have interned at The Julian Center, Indianapolis Monthly, and The Polis Center.

- Political Science interns have worked at the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, the Indiana State Senate, and Planned Parenthood.

- A Science, Technology & Society student interned in Media Relations at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
