Tutoring

Butler students have access to multiple resources that can assist them with course work. Through departmental study tables and individualized peer tutoring, students have the opportunity to interact with peers who have previously mastered the material and understand the difficulties each subject presents.

Early Registration

The Early Registration program is a series of one-day sessions for students and their families, held during the spring of each year, to facilitate student matriculation to Butler. Representatives from each college and academic office welcome students and their families. On-line placement exams, completed prior to early registration, allow student to prepare to register for fall courses with a faculty member from their department of study or with an Exploratory Studies advisor.

Welcome Week

A collaboration of the Learning Resource Center and Student Affairs, the Welcome Week program is a three-day orientation for new Butler students that takes place during the few days before the fall semester commences.

At this time students meet with their orientation groups to discuss their summer reading and participate in a myriad of social activities, designed to familiarize them with the university and to expand their social network.

January Registration

January Registration is a program for students who begin their studies at Butler in the spring semester. It includes a casual meal with peers, staff, and faculty; a social activity; information sessions; placement testing if needed; and registration.

Early Term Grades

The Early Term Grades program is a collaboration between the Learning Resource Center, the Office of Registration and Records, and faculty advisors. During the fifth week of each semester, faculty are asked to evaluate the course work of first and second year students. Grade evaluations are distributed to students and advisors to help them gauge progress in a timely fashion.

Transitional Advising

Students who are unsure or questioning their choice of major may meet with an advisor to explore other possible areas of interest. Transitional advising is also available for students interested in adding a second major or minor to their program of study.

Exploratory Studies Program

Exploratory Studies is a structured program aimed at helping students identify interests, explore academic options, gain exposure to the career development process, and gather information about careers that interest them. Students who are undecided about their major or who have multiple interests are encouraged to exercise their intellectual curiosity through a number of programs and classes designed to help students determine their own best course of study. In addition, students receive specialized attention from trained academic advisors who assist the student in their decision-making process. Program services include:

  • Developmental academic advising
  • Exploratory Studies class (LC103)
