Without question, the effective operation of our two
student-managed media platforms-The Butler Collegian and
The Collegian Online-is central to the mission of the
Eugene S. Pulliam School of Journalism as they allow journalism and
PCC students to hone their skills outside the classroom and enhance
their "marketability" as mass communicators.
The Collegian
The Collegian, a weekly newspaper, has been a major
source of campus news since it was first published in 1886. The
newspaper, which was named "newspaper of the year" in 2005 by the
Indiana Collegiate Press Association, has been the recipient of
numerous awards from the ICPA, Hoosier State Press Association, and
the Indiana Society of Journalists. The Collegian is produced in a
state-of-the-art computer lab, where newspaper staffers have access
to the latest publishing and design software. Students who work on
The Collegian are responsible for the entire publication
process-from content conception to print. This experiential
learning opportunity mimics the experience a student would receive
working as a professional journalist and is rivaled only by work
within the professional publishing industry itself.
The Collegian Online
The Collegian Online, an all electronic news source
designed and operated by Butler University students, was one of the
first online student newspapers to be published in the United
States. Experience working on the online edition of The
Collegian enhances the marketability of journalism graduates
by demonstrating that they have learned how to cope with the
challenge digital delivery poses for accuracy, reporting time,
correction of errors, design and use of art and graphics. The site
