Jordan College of the Arts - Event Attendance Requirements

 

As an essential component of arts education, all undergraduate JCA majors (including primary, secondary and double majors and music minors) are required to attend events in their discipline and related areas. Double majors within JCA are required to complete their total amount of arts attendance requirements for their primary major and one half the amount of arts requirements for their secondary major. Each department or program establishes minimum attendance expectations for its students.  Attendance records will be maintained in the JCA office, see Janice Thornburgh if you have any questions.

Effective Fall 2013:Current students, beginning with the class of 2016, and incoming students beyond that date are required to complete eight (8) Metro Indy Arts Events prior to graduation.  Two (2) events credits in Art Dance, Music and Theatre, completed in the Indianapolis Metro area and surrounding counties selected from the External Specified Event list, fulfills this requirement.  The student brings back the ticket stub(s) and program(s) or other written verification of attendance to the department head or advisor; the student obtains the department head's or advisor's signature on an Event Attendance card and returns it to the JCA receptionist. 

Notes:

  • All JCA student, faculty, and guest recitals/productions/exhibitions/lectures, along with all Clowes Hall arts events, will satisfy attendance requirements, to receive credit for on-campus events at Clowes Hall, obtain an Event Attendance Card from a Clowes Hall staff prior to the start of the performance.  Complete the card and return it to the person in charge at the conclusion of the performance.
  • Additionally, students must attend events outside the Butler community selected from the attachedExternal Specified Event list.  The student brings back the ticket stub(s) and program(s) or other written verification of attendance to the department head or advisor; and the student obtains the department head's or advisor's signature on an Event Attendance card and returns it to the JCFA receptionist.
  • Outside events are limited to those that are closely related in nature to on-campus productions.
  • Students will not receive credit for performances or exhibitions in which they participate
  • Attendance at repeat performances of the same program will not count.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                               

ART + DESIGN MAJORS

Art + Design students must register for the appropriate section of JC 100/200/300/400 each spring term of full-time enrollment.  This course is exempt from the 4-course Pass/Fail limit.  There are no event attendance requirements for Art +Design minors.

  • Art + Design majors are required to attend 8 on campus performance/exhibitions/lectures are required over the course of four years. Two arts credits each year in one of the following disciplines: Art, Dance, Music and Theatre and 2 Metro Indy Events annually.
  • 8 Indy Metro Events are required over the course of four years (these are from an approved list of events, listed on the JCA website). 

ARTS ADMINISTRATION - GENERAL; ARTS ADMIN/MUSIC and ARTS ADMIN/THEATRE

Arts Administration students must register for the appropriate section of JC 100/200/300/400 each spring term of full-time enrollment.  This course is exempt from the 4-course Pass/Fail limit.  

  • Arts Administration Generalist majors and Arts Administration Music majors are required to attend 10 performances/events and 2 Metro Indy Events annually.  Students participating in a full-time internship during the academic year, are required to attend 5 performances and 1 Metro Indy. Arts Administration Theatre majors are required to follow the department of theatre requirements, including 2 Metro Indy Events annually.
  • 8 Indy Metro Events are required over the course of four years (these are from an approved list of events, listed on the JCA website)

THEATRE MAJORS

Theatre majors must register for the appropriate section of JC100/200/300/400 each spring semester of full-time enrollment.  This course is exempt from the 4-course Pass/Fail limit.  There are no event attendance requirements for Theatre minors.

  • Theatre majors are required to attend 4 main stage theatre productions, 4 IRT and Phoenix productions each year.
  • 8 Indy Metro Events are required over the course of four years (these are from an approved list of events, listed on the JCA website).  Theatre students will count 2 of their IRT and Phoenix visits towards their Metro Indy Requirement.

DANCE MAJORS

Dance students must register for the appropriate sections of DA190/290/390/490 each spring term of full-time enrollment. This course is exempt from the 4-course Pass/Fail limit.  There are no event attendance requirements for minors.

  • Dance majors are required to complete 8 arts credits and 2 Metro Indy Events annually for DA 190, 6 arts credits and 2 Metro Indy Events annually for DA 290, 4 arts credits and 2 Metro Indy Events annually for DA 390 and 4 arts credits and 2 Metro Indy Events annually for DA 490.  
  • These Pass/Fail, non-credit courses require attendance at dance, music, theatre, art, and arts-related lecture events as prescribed by each course.
  • 8 Indy Metro Events are required over the course of four years (these are from an approved list of events, listed on the JCA website)

MUSIC MAJORS

Music students are not required to register for JC 100/200/300/400. Records are maintained in the JCA office.

Undergraduate music majors (both primary and secondary) must attend 16 performances/events per year; for students who are student teaching, studying abroad, or in full-time internships during the academic year, only 8 performances/events are required in that year.

Annual distribution will be 2 in theatre, 2 in dance, 2 in art, 2 of your choice (including arts-related lectures), and 8 in music; for students who are student teaching, studying abroad, or in full-time internships during the academic year, the distribution for that year is 1 in theatre, 1 in dance, 1 in art, 1 of your choice, and 4 in music.

Events that fulfill the Butler Cultural Requirement ("Eight Before You Graduate") can also be credited towards the above totals, as can events that fulfill the Metro Indy Event Attendance requirement for all JCA majors, which requires 8 approved off-campus events prior to graduation (2 in art, 2 in dance, 2 in theatre, and 2 in music).

MUSIC MINORS

Music and Jazz Studies minors must attend a minimum of 16 events during their matriculation at Butler, regardless of the number of semesters of enrollment as an official Music or Jazz Studies minor. Of these events, 8 must be in music, 2 in art, 2 in dance, 2 in theatre, and 2 of your choice (including arts-related lectures). Records are maintained in the JCA office.
