FREE Antivirus Software & Updates for Students

Butler provides Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) with free definition updates for Windows and Mac. You must remove all Butler provided antivirus software from your computer when your affiliation with Butler ends. You may not redistribute this software under any circumstances. Do not run multiple antivirus applications on your computer at once! 

Complete the steps below to download and install Butler provided antivirus. *By downloading and installing this software, you agree to the terms below.

Terms and Agreements ~ Show Information

Butler University requires that all computers attached to the Butler network run an up-to-date antivirus package. This program provides you a great opportunity to use, as a Butler Student, the recommended antivirus software package for FREE.  This software is provided under the terms of the "Butler University Student Antivirus" agreement below.

This acceptance form is valid for the Symantec product(s) below, which shall be referred to collectively herein as the "Software". Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec AntiVirus are made available to you because Butler University has purchased license coverage for the Software. Butler University is extending to you the right to use the Software on your personal computer. You do not own the license or the media, rather you are authorized to use the Software and associated media pursuant to the terms and conditions of the license(s) granted to Butler University for the term of Butler University's License Agreement. You will be required to remove the Software from your personal machine immediately upon the earlier of (a) any event which causes you no longer to be a student of the institution for any reason or (b) expiration of the License Agreement term.  You are authorized by this agreement to run the Software on one personal computer.

Rights have been granted by Butler University for the following product(s):

  • Symantec Endpoint Protection for Windows
  • Symantec Antivirus client for Macintosh

Please review each statement*:

  • I will read and abide by the license agreement(s) associated with this Software.
  • I will remove the Software from my home machine immediately upon the earlier of: (a) any event which causes you no longer to be a student of the institution for any reason or, (b) expiration of the License Agreement term.
  • I understand that I am licensed to use the Software on a single personal computer.
  1. Close all programs
  2. Uninstall all antivirus software (including Symantec, Norton, McAfee, etc.). Note: If you have a Mac with an old version of Symantec you must run the Mac Uninstaller Utility before installing a new version of Symantec.
  3. Restart your computer and return to this page
  4. Download the version of antivirus you need depending on the type of computer you have. Note: To install the 32 or 64-bit versions, save the .zip file to your computer then open it. A folder with the setup.exe file in it will appear. Drag the file from the folder onto your desktop and then double-click setup.exe to run the installer.
  • Once installation is complete you may delete the install package

Every student MUST have functioning and up-to-date antivirus software installed on each of their computers. Once installed, it is the student's responsibility to keep the program up-to-date and periodically scan their computer for viruses.

If you choose not to install the Butler provided version of Symantec antivirus, Butler strongly suggests using one of the following antivirus products. You must have a subscription to one of these services if they are not free.

  • Microsoft Security Essentials
  • McAfee Antivirus
  • Norton Antivirus

Computers found to be infected by a virus will be removed from the network due to the security risk(s) they pose.
