Motivation
There are many sources of motivation that energizes individual
behavior. Some people are driven by internal expectations and
others by outside sources. Some of these factors include
achievement, recognition, the actual work, formed relationships,
advancement, and growth. These could lead to a gradient of
satisfaction.
Intrinsic Process Motivation. Individuals
engage in activities which they consider fun. These people will
divert from tasks that are relevant to goal attainment in order to
pursue tasks which are more enjoyable.
Instrumental Motivation. Individuals
participate in behaviors that will lead to certain outcome such as
praise, pay, reward, etc. This exchange relationship is the basis
of the organization and individual.
External self concept-based Motivation. The
individual is other-directed. They adopt the expectations of others
in an attempt to meet those expectation through their actions. This
is an attempt to receive positive social feedback, acceptance, and
status of others.
Internal self concept-based Motivation. The
individual is inner-directed. They set internally based standards
to become the basis of self. They are driven by their personal
concepts of competency and achievement.
Goal Internalization. The individual adopts
attitudes and behaviors because it is congruent with their value
system. They believe in the cause and are willing to work towards
the goals which are supportive of that cause.
