Thomas (Personal Web Page Server)

You can access your website by going to  http://blue.butler.edu/~username , where you would replace "username" with your Butler username.

From an on-campus Windows computer, you can access your Thomas folder by following these steps:

• Click on the start menu at the bottom left of your screen
• If on a Windows XP machine, click on "Run..".
• Type "\\thomas\www" into the box and click "Run."
• If you are running on a Windows 7 or Vista machine, enter "\\thomas\www" into the search bar in the start menu and press the enter key on your keyboard.
• If you have already created a website in Microsoft Publisher or a similar program, enter the website folder into this folder.
• Access your Thomas page to verify that the content was uploaded.

From an on-campus Mac, you can access your Thomas folder by following these steps:

• At the top of your screen, click on "Go".
• Click on "Connect to Server" at the bottom of the "Go" drop down menu.
• Type in "smb://thomas/www" in the Server Address box, and then click Connect.
• Enter your Butler user name and password into the box that pops up.
• Your Thomas folder will pop up. You can then drag and drop your website files into that folder.

• Access your Thomas page to verify that the content was uploaded.

Sometimes when attempting to access a Thomas site a message appears that says "Forbidden, your client is not allowed to access the requested object". This means you have not given permission for people on the Internet to view the page. In this case the folder permissions need to be reset. Follow the steps below to accomplish this.

1. Open a program that can communicate with a Unix server. SSH secure shell is a good program. If you don't have a program to do this, go to http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html and download putty.exe located at the top of the download area.
2. After you open the program, you will want to connect to the server "thomas.butler.edu". Login with your Butler username and password.
3. Once you have logged in and are at a prompt for thomas, type "fix_account" (without the quotes). This will reset all permissions and allow the entire world to view your web pages.
