Panopto Resources
Panopto Overview and Butler University Room Configurations
Panopto is a presentation capture platform that allows you
to capture, edit, stream, archive and share recordings.
Faculty use Panopto to capture classroom interactions, lecture,
presentations, student demonstrations and role-playing
scenarios. It is also used to create learning modules to
deliver ancillary content or pre-lecture information.
Students view recordings from the Internet to review classroom
content, assess their peers' work as well as their own, and create
recordings for course work.
Panopto can be used to capture a variety of media from various
sources. It can be as simple as an audio recording or as
complex as recording from two computers, cameras, and projection in
a classroom. Over two dozen rooms on campus are
configured with the equipment to record audio and/or video.
Below we have defined the various levels of configurations on
campus for using Panopto.
For more information on the pedagogical uses of Panopto, please
contact the Center for Academic Technology (x8575).

ready rooms.
Room Configurations
Personal
This configuration is used when you are recording from your
desktop or laptop and need only to capture audio or the computer
screen and audio. The requirements are a desktop or
laptop computer (Mac or PC) capable of running the Panopto Recorder
software and a microphone. Adding a web camera to capture the
speaker or other activities in a small room is optional in this
configuration. This set up is ideal for recording learning
modules or demonstrations that include screen capture, audio and
possibly video.
Standard/Standard Video
Standard Panopto-ready rooms are mediated with a desktop
computer (Mac or PC), microphone, and a projector. The
Panopto Recorder software is already installed on the
computer. The microphone may be a lavalier microphone,
ceiling microphone or hand-held device already incorporated into
the computer system. Standard rooms can be used to capture
lectures, presentations and anything projected from the computer or
on the computer screen. A Standard Video Panopto room will
have all of these features plus a wall-mounted video camera to
capture classroom activities.
Small Room Video
Small Room Video Panopto rooms are mediated with a desktop
computer (Mac or PC), microphone and a wall-mounted video
camera. The microphones in these rooms are
ceiling-mounted. These rooms are primarily used by small
groups to capture counseling sessions, meetings, demonstrations,
and role-playing scenarios.
Mobile
Panopto can also be used to capture video in the field or away
from the classroom. Mobile Panopto-ready functions require a
laptop (Mac or PC) with the Panopto recorder installed and set up,
a microphone and a web camera. This set-up can capture
student teaching demonstrations or performances away from the
classroom where Internet access is not available. Offline
recordings can be automatically uploaded to Panopto once the
computer is reconnected to the Internet. Portability is the
main factor of this particular layout that sets it apart from the
other types of Panopto configurations.

document cameras, high def cameras), Windows Recorder can.
- Mac Recorder does not have live broadcast feature, Windows
recorder does.
- Mac Recorder does not have background upload service, Windows
recorder does.
- Mac Recorder user interface is smaller and simplified, Windows
Recorder layout contains preview windows and is larger
- PC Recorder does not have a "preview video" option, which
allows users to watch their video or screen capture video within
the Recorder before uploading it to the server
- Mac Recorder cannot re-upload files, Windows recorder can.
- Mac Recorder does not have a Pause button, Windows Recorder
does.
- DV Archival quality option for video is only available in
Windows recorder.

Recorder and up to 15 FPS on Windows Recorder.
- Mac Recorder does not contain an option to adjust bit rate, PC
Recorder does.
Despite the differences, the viewer, editor and management
experience is consistent no matter which Recorder you use.
Is
Windows 7 supported?
Yes, our Panopto Recorder and Editor have been fully tested on
Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit).
Do I
have to be online to complete a recording?
No, the Recorder allows for "Offline" recordings. With this
ability, a user may record audio/video/screen cap/PowerPoint
without network connectivity. The system will capture the content
and store the material locally on the recording computer. Once
network connectivity is restored, an upload of the content to the
Panopto server will be initiated.
If you need to record offline, follow these steps:
- You must log in at least once to enable offline
recording. When you are logging into the Panopto recorder,
check the "Remember me" box.

When you are finished with the Panopto recorder, close the
application and do not log out. If you log out, you won't
be able to record offline.
Can
notes or slides be printed?
The current version of Panopto does not allow for notes or
slides to be printed.
