Windows Updates for Students

In order to keep the Butler network secure, it is necessary to apply software updates on a regular basis.

Automatic Updates

Butler University recommends setting your computer to update Windows automatically.

In Windows 8

  1. Point your mouse to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.
  2. Enter Windows Update in the search box. 
  3. Click Settings, and then select Install optional updates.
  4. In the left pane, click Change settings.
  5. Under Important updates, choose the option that you want.
  6. Under Recommended updates, select the Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates check box, and then click OK. You may be prompted for authentication.

In Windows Vista and 7

  1. Cick on the Start menu and click on the Control Panel
  2. Open the Security Center
  3. Under Windows Update, click Turn automatic updating on or off
  4. Under the Important Updates box, change the dropdown box to Install Updates automatically (recommended)
  5. Click OK. You may be prompted for authentication

Manually Installing Updates

  1. Connect to the Internet and launch Internet Explorer
  2. Navigate to http://update.microsoft.com and follow the prompts
  3. Select "Install Express Updates"
